HYROX Gent 2026

Gent closes the 2026 HYROX European calendar with a four-day event from December 17-20. Belgium's second-largest city by area and one of its most celebrated historic destinations, Gent combines a spectacular medieval centre — Gravensteen castle, the Graslei quay, and Saint Bavo's Cathedral — with strong transport links that make it easily accessible from across Belgium, the Netherlands, and northern France.

Racing in December means cold winter conditions outdoors, but the HYROX indoor format keeps competition comfortable. Gent in mid-December adds a festive backdrop: the city's winter markets and Christmas lights make a race weekend here genuinely memorable. For athletes looking to end their season on a strong note before the holiday period, Gent offers both the competitive outlet and the celebration to match.

Where to Stay

Gent has a wide range of accommodation, from boutique hotels in converted historic buildings to modern business hotels near Sint-Pieters station.

  • Gent city centre / Korenmarkt area -- the heart of the historic city, with the famous Graslei and Korenlei quays, excellent restaurants, and multiple boutique hotel options. Around 2 km from the station and Flanders Expo, accessible by tram
  • Sint-Pieters area -- the neighbourhood directly around the station and Flanders Expo. Practical and close to the event venue. A mix of business hotels and apartments
  • Dampoort area -- Gent's second major station area, slightly further east. Less touristy and with good budget accommodation options. Tram connections to Sint-Pieters and the centre
  • Brussels (30 minutes by train) provides vastly more accommodation at various price points. A Brussels base is entirely practical for the Gent race
  • Budget chains (ibis, Campanile, B&B Hotels) are represented at and near Sint-Pieters station

Tip: December in Gent coincides with Christmas markets and increased tourism. Hotel prices in the historic centre rise sharply in December. Book accommodation early, or consider basing yourself in Brussels where supply is much larger. The Sint-Pieters station area offers competitive prices and walk-to-venue convenience.

Training in Gent

Gent has a strong fitness community. The city's large student population (Ghent University is one of Belgium's biggest) keeps demand for quality facilities high.

  • CrossFit affiliates -- Gent has several CrossFit boxes with HYROX-relevant equipment. Many have run specific HYROX preparation classes or partnerships. Guest day passes are generally available
  • Functional fitness studios -- a growing number of studios across the city have SkiErgs, rowing machines, sled tracks, and wall balls. Contact studios in advance to confirm HYROX-specific equipment availability
  • Commercial chains (Basic-Fit, Jims) have multiple Gent locations and offer affordable day passes. Equipment varies by location
  • For more specialist options, Brussels and Antwerp (both under 1 hour by train) have larger selections of HYROX-focused training facilities

Running Routes

  • Citadelpark -- the large park adjacent to the Museum of Fine Arts, approximately 1 km from Sint-Pieters station. Popular with local runners, with good path surfaces and varied terrain
  • Leie and Scheldt river paths -- flat towpaths along both rivers that flow through and around Gent. The riverside paths offer long, traffic-free running with historic views of the city
  • Blaarmeersen recreation area -- a large sports and recreation park west of the city with running paths around a lake. A short cycle or bus journey from the centre
  • December running in Gent requires good cold-weather clothing and lighting for early-morning or evening sessions. The river towpaths are generally flat and provide consistent footing

Nearby HYROX Races

Gent sits at the heart of the Benelux HYROX corridor with several events accessible throughout the 2025/26 season:

  • Mechelen: March 26-29, 2026 (HYROX Mechelen 2026, approximately 55 km east, around 45 minutes by train)
  • Rotterdam: April 15-19, 2026 (HYROX Rotterdam 2026, approximately 155 km north, around 1.5 hours by train)
  • Amsterdam: January 21-25, 2026 (HYROX Amsterdam 2026, approximately 220 km north, around 2 hours by train)
  • Paris: December 12-20, 2026 (dates overlap with Gent — both events in the same week for athletes who can travel. Paris via Thalys from Brussels-Midi is approximately 1h20m from Gent)

Race Day Tips

  • Arrive at least 90 minutes before your wave start. Four-day events with large fields require extra time for registration, bag drop, and warm-up
  • Collect your race bib and timing chip at registration. Bring a printed or digital copy of your confirmation and a valid ID
  • December in Gent is cold and often wet. Pack warm, waterproof clothing for the journey to the venue. The indoor hall will be warmer once the day is underway, but early morning arrivals will feel the cold
  • Belgian HYROX fields are strong. Gent attracts athletes from Flanders, Brussels, the Netherlands, and northern France. Expect competitive depth across all categories
  • The Christmas market and festive atmosphere in central Gent adds genuine atmosphere to a race weekend. Plan post-race time in the centre for mulled wine and traditional Flemish food
  • Bring your own nutrition. Belgian events are well organised but vendor queues build during peak wave times at large four-day events
  • Spectators: Entry is typically free for supporters. If spectators are visiting the Christmas markets before the event, the festive centre of Gent is worth the journey on its own
