Mechelen joins the HYROX calendar for 2026 with a four-day event from March 26-29. Positioned between Brussels and Antwerp in the heart of Belgium, Mechelen is one of the most accessible cities in the Benelux region for international athletes. Its central rail connections and proximity to Brussels Airport make it a practical base for a race weekend.

March racing in an indoor venue means controlled conditions regardless of Belgian spring weather. The Benelux HYROX community is among the most active in Europe, and Mechelen's proximity to multiple other race venues — Rotterdam, Amsterdam, and Gent — makes it an attractive stop for athletes planning a multi-race season.

Date & Venue

Belgian HYROX events have used large sports and exhibition complexes capable of hosting the full course with multiple wave starts per day. Once the Mechelen venue is confirmed, specific transport and accommodation options become much easier to identify. Getting There

By Air

• Brussels Airport (BRU) -- approximately 25 km from Mechelen. Direct trains run from the airport to Brussels-Central and Brussels-Midi in around 20 minutes, then onward to Mechelen in a further 20 minutes. BRU has excellent European connections
• Brussels South Charleroi (CRL) -- around 70 km south. Budget airline hub (Ryanair, Wizz Air). Bus connections run to Brussels-Midi, then train to Mechelen
• Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) -- around 160 km north. Eurostar and Thalys-successor services connect Amsterdam to Brussels and Antwerp, with easy onward connections to Mechelen

By Train

• Mechelen station sits on the busy Brussels-Antwerp main line, served by frequent intercity trains
• Brussels-Central to Mechelen: approximately 20 minutes by IC train. Services run several times per hour
• Antwerp-Central to Mechelen: approximately 15 minutes. Antwerp is a major hub with Thalys connections to Amsterdam and Paris
• Amsterdam Centraal to Mechelen: approximately 2 hours via Antwerp
• Paris Gare du Nord to Mechelen: around 2.5 hours via Brussels on Eurostar or Thalys services

By Public Transport

• Mechelen city centre is compact and largely walkable from the station
• De Lijn bus services connect the station to outer areas of the city. Check the De Lijn app for real-time routes
• The NMBS/SNCB rail network provides the most reliable inter-city connections across Belgium
• Taxis and Uber are available at Mechelen station and throughout the city

By Car

• Mechelen sits at the junction of the E19 (Brussels-Antwerp) and E17 motorways, making it very accessible by car from across Belgium and the Netherlands
• Parking in the city centre is available but can be tight on busy event weekends. Check for event-specific parking guidance once the venue is confirmed
• Park-and-ride facilities on the outskirts of Mechelen offer a practical alternative for those driving from a distance

Where to Stay

Mechelen is a small city; staying in the centre puts you within walking distance of most attractions and easy reach of the station. Alternatively, Brussels and Antwerp are both 20-25 minutes by train and offer a much wider choice of accommodation.

• Mechelen city centre -- a range of boutique hotels and B&Bs within walking distance of the station and the historic core. Limited in total capacity, so book early for a race weekend
• Brussels -- 20-25 minutes by train and much wider accommodation options. Brussels-Central or Brussels-Midi areas offer excellent transport links back to Mechelen on race day
• Antwerp -- 15 minutes by train. Lively city with a wide range of hotels. Antwerp-Central station is a spectacular transport hub and easy to navigate
• Budget chains (ibis, B&B Hotels) have locations in all three cities and represent good value for race weekends

Tip: Given Mechelen's small hotel stock, Brussels or Antwerp may be more practical bases. The frequent and reliable Belgian rail connections make either city a comfortable option for the race commute.

Training in Mechelen

Mechelen itself is a compact city with limited specialist HYROX training facilities. Brussels and Antwerp both offer more options for athletes visiting the region ahead of the race.

• CrossFit affiliates -- Brussels and Antwerp both have several established CrossFit boxes with HYROX-relevant equipment. Many offer guest day passes
• Functional fitness studios -- a growing number of studios across the Brussels-Antwerp corridor have SkiErgs, rowers and sled tracks appropriate for HYROX preparation
• Commercial gym chains (Basic-Fit, Fitness World) are widely available in Mechelen, Brussels, and Antwerp but sled track access varies
• Contact gyms in advance to confirm sled availability and any guest day pass policies

Running Routes

• Mechelen city moat and ramparts paths -- a flat loop around the old fortifications. Good for easy warm-up runs and accessible directly from the city centre
• Vrijbroekpark -- a large green park on the northeast edge of Mechelen with wide paths and varied terrain. Around 2 km from the centre and ideal for longer efforts
• Dijle river towpath -- the river that runs through Mechelen has accessible paths along both banks, suitable for easy to moderate pace runs of varying distances
• The flat Flemish landscape around Mechelen is excellent for cycling, and many local athletes cross-train on the road network between towns

Race Day Tips

• Arrive at least 90 minutes before your wave start. Registration and bag drop queues build quickly at four-day events
• Collect your race bib and timing chip at registration. Bring a printed or digital copy of your confirmation and a valid ID
• Late March in Belgium can be cold and unpredictable outdoors — dress warmly for the journey to the venue and pack dry clothes for after the race
• Belgian HYROX events typically attract a competitive local field. Seed yourself appropriately in your wave to avoid congestion on the sled push
• Bring your own nutrition for before and during the race. Vendors are present at Belgian events but queues build during peak wave times
• Spectators: Entry is typically free for supporters. Belgian crowds are knowledgeable and enthusiastic about fitness events
• If staying in Brussels or Antwerp, check train times in advance — Sunday services can run less frequently than weekday timetables
