HYROX Riga 2026

Riga brings HYROX to the Baltic region with a two-day event on May 30-31, 2026. As Latvia's capital and the largest city in the Baltic states, Riga combines a spectacular UNESCO-listed Old Town with a modern sports and event infrastructure that has hosted international competitions across multiple disciplines.

Late May in Riga means long daylight hours — sunset is not until around 10 PM — and mild temperatures typically in the mid-teens. The HYROX event falls just three weeks before the World Championships in Stockholm, making it an ideal qualifier or final prep race for Baltic and Nordic athletes targeting the season's biggest stage.

Getting There

By Air

  • Riga International Airport (RIX) -- approximately 10 km southwest of the city centre. The Baltic region's main hub, served by airBaltic (based here with the widest route network), Ryanair, Wizz Air, Finnair, Lufthansa, and KLM. Direct routes available from London, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Helsinki, Stockholm, Warsaw, and many other European cities
  • Bus number 22 runs from the airport to the city centre (Abrenes iela stop) in around 30 minutes. Runs frequently throughout the day and night
  • Taxis from RIX to the centre cost approximately €10-15 with metered fares. Use the official taxi ranks or book via the Bolt app to avoid unmarked taxis

By Train

  • Riga Central station (Rīgas Centrālā stacija) is adjacent to the Old Town and the bus terminal. The main hub for domestic and international services
  • Overnight train to Vilnius (Lithuania): approximately 4-5 hours
  • Overnight train to Warsaw: available with change in Vilnius or directly (approximately 10-12 hours)
  • Tallinn (Estonia) is best reached by bus (Lux Express, Ecolines) in approximately 4.5 hours, as no direct rail service is currently available
  • Helsinki is accessible by ferry from Tallinn (2.5 hours, Eckerö Line or Tallink Silja) — a popular route for Finnish athletes travelling to Riga events

By Public Transport

  • Riga has an extensive tram, trolleybus, and bus network operated by Rīgas Satiksme
  • The e-talons contactless card system covers all Riga public transport and can be loaded at the airport or major stations
  • Bolt (app-based taxis) are widely used in Riga and considerably cheaper than traditional taxi ranks. Recommended for race-day transport to the venue
  • The Old Town and central areas are walkable; most hotels are within 2-3 km of central transport hubs

By Car

  • Riga is connected by the E67 Via Baltica to Warsaw and the E77 to Helsinki via Tallinn
  • Driving from Tallinn to Riga takes approximately 4 hours; from Vilnius approximately 4-5 hours; from Warsaw approximately 8 hours
  • Parking in central Riga is limited and paid. Outer-city parking with public transport links is a practical option for race day

Where to Stay

Riga offers excellent value accommodation compared to most western European cities. The Old Town and centre have a wide range of quality hotels at competitive prices.

  • Old Town (Vecrīga) -- Riga's historic heart with medieval architecture, boutique hotels, and excellent restaurants. Very walkable and close to Central station. Ideal for a race weekend that combines competing with sightseeing
  • Centre (Centrs) -- the area around Barona iela and the Art Nouveau district. Wider range of mid-range and budget hotels than the Old Town. Excellent tram and bus connections to all parts of the city
  • Quiet Centre (Klusais centrs) -- the neighbourhood of wooden houses and art nouveau buildings northwest of the Old Town. Peaceful and authentic, with good accommodation options
  • Airbnb and short-term rentals are widely available and competitively priced throughout Riga. A good option for groups travelling together
  • Budget hotels and hostels are concentrated around the Central station area and in the Centre. Prices are notably lower than in western European race cities

Tip: Riga is one of the most cost-effective HYROX race destinations in Europe. Food, accommodation, and transport are significantly cheaper than in comparable western or Nordic cities. The Old Town alone makes the trip worthwhile.

Training in Riga

Riga has a growing CrossFit and functional fitness community. Several well-equipped facilities in the city are appropriate for HYROX preparation.

  • CrossFit affiliates -- Riga has several CrossFit boxes with HYROX-relevant equipment including SkiErgs and rowing machines. Many offer guest day passes to visiting athletes
  • Functional fitness studios -- a number of specialist facilities across the city have invested in sled tracks and functional training equipment. Contact studios in advance to confirm HYROX-specific availability
  • Commercial gym chains (Lemon Gym, Fitness House) have multiple locations across Riga and offer affordable day passes. Equipment varies by location
  • The Olympic Sports Centre and other large public facilities occasionally have suitable equipment. Check directly with each facility

Running Routes

  • Mežaparks (Forest Park) -- Riga's largest urban park on the eastern edge of the city. Excellent trail and path running through pine forest. About 5 km from the city centre by tram
  • Daugava riverbank promenade -- a flat, paved path along the western bank of the river south of the Old Town. Good for tempo runs and accessible directly from the centre. Views of the Old Town skyline
  • Lucavsala island -- a flat green island in the Daugava river with a 2 km perimeter path. Popular with local runners and quiet on weekday mornings
  • The Pārdaugava district (across the river from Old Town) has several parks and quieter residential streets suitable for easy running away from tourist areas

Nearby HYROX Races

Riga's late May timing makes it a strategic race in the Baltic and Nordic HYROX calendar:

  • Helsinki: May 9-10, 2026 (HYROX Helsinki 2026, approximately 310 km by ferry via Tallinn)
  • Warsaw: April 16-19, 2026 (HYROX Warsaw 2026, approximately 630 km south by road)
  • Stockholm (World Championships): June 18-21, 2026 (approximately 3 hours by flight or 16+ hours by ferry from Riga)
  • Gdansk: HYROX Gdansk 2026, October 10-11 (approximately 430 km south)

Race Day Tips

  • Arrive at least 90 minutes before your wave start. Registration, bag drop, and warm-up area access all take time at a two-day event with a concentrated programme
  • Collect your race bib and timing chip at registration. Bring a printed or digital copy of your confirmation and a valid ID
  • Late May in Riga brings mild weather, but evenings can be cool. Bring warm layers for the journey to and from the venue
  • The Baltic HYROX community is tight-knit and competitive. Expect a strong local field and an enthusiastic atmosphere
  • Bring your own nutrition. Vendors will be present but the field of competitors is concentrated over two days, so peak wave times can mean long queues
  • Spectators: Entry is typically free for supporters. Riga event venues are well organised for spectator access
  • Use the post-race period to explore Riga's Old Town. The city has excellent restaurants, craft beer bars, and café culture at very reasonable prices
