HYROX Rome 2026

Rome joins the HYROX calendar for 2026 with a four-day event from September 24-27. It is one of three Italian stops in the season alongside Bologna and Milan, giving Italian athletes a strong home circuit. Rome's race falls mid-autumn, which means cooler temperatures than summer and excellent conditions for racing.

For international athletes, Rome is one of Europe's most connected cities. Direct flights arrive from across Europe, North America and the Middle East, making it a natural destination race for those who want to combine HYROX with a long weekend in one of the world's great cities.

Getting There

By Air

  • Leonardo da Vinci Airport (FCO, Fiumicino) -- Rome's main international airport, about 30 km west of the city centre. Direct trains (Leonardo Express) run to Roma Termini in 32 minutes
  • Ciampino Airport (CIA) -- closer to the city, about 15 km southeast. Served by budget carriers including Ryanair and Wizz Air. Bus connections run to Roma Termini in 40-50 minutes
  • From FCO, regional trains also serve Roma Tiburtina and Ostiense, useful depending on your hotel location

By Train

  • Roma Termini is the central hub for all national and international rail services
  • High-speed Frecciarossa trains connect Rome with Milan (~3h), Florence (~1.5h), Naples (~1h), and Bologna (~2.5h)
  • From Termini, the metro (lines A and B), buses and taxis serve the rest of the city
  • Once the venue is confirmed, specific metro or bus routes from Termini will become clear

By Public Transport

  • Rome's metro has two main lines (A and B) that intersect at Termini
  • Bus and tram networks fill the gaps not covered by the metro
  • Validate your ticket before boarding buses and trams, or use contactless payment where available
  • Taxis are metered and reliable, though traffic in Rome's centre can be slow during the day

By Car

  • Rome has a Limited Traffic Zone (ZTL) in the historic centre that restricts entry for most vehicles
  • Driving to a Rome event venue is generally not recommended unless the venue is outside the ZTL
  • If driving, check the venue location carefully and pre-book parking before travelling

Where to Stay

Until the venue is confirmed, central Rome is a safe choice that keeps you close to public transport links to most parts of the city.

  • Termini area -- the most connected neighbourhood. Wide range of hotels from budget to mid-range. Metro lines A and B both start here
  • Trastevere -- a lively neighbourhood on the west bank of the Tiber. Good restaurants and a strong local atmosphere. Bus and tram connections to Termini
  • Prati -- near the Vatican, quieter than the historic centre. Good hotel options with easy bus links to Termini
  • Parioli / Flaminio -- upmarket northern neighbourhood. Metro line A stops at Flaminio (Piazza del Popolo). Quieter and slightly removed from tourist crowds
  • Budget travellers will find good-value guesthouses and hostels around Termini and across Trastevere

Tip: Once the venue is announced, check its proximity to metro stops and adjust your accommodation accordingly. Rome hotel prices rise significantly during busy autumn weekends, so booking early makes a real difference.

Training in Rome

Rome has a growing functional fitness community. Finding a gym with SkiErgs, rowers and sled tracks is more straightforward than it was a few years ago, though dedicated HYROX training boxes are less common than in northern European cities.

  • CrossFit Rome -- the city's established CrossFit community includes several affiliates. Check for HYROX-focused classes or open gym sessions with relevant equipment
  • Functional training studios -- a number of studios in the Parioli, Prati and Trastevere areas have invested in functional equipment including rowers and ski ergs
  • Standard commercial gyms (Virgin Active, McFIT) have cardio equipment but may not have sled tracks or wall balls in a competitive HYROX setup
  • Ask your specific gym about sled availability before travelling -- not all locations have them

Running Routes

  • Villa Borghese -- Rome's main park, with wide paths and good running surfaces. Flat in places, with some gentle climbs. Centrally located and easy to reach by metro (Spagna or Flaminio)
  • Lungo il Tevere (Tiber riverbank) -- long riverside paths running north-south through the city. Flat, traffic-free on the lower promenades, and excellent for longer tempo runs
  • Via Appia Antica -- the ancient Appian Way offers a unique historic running experience on cobblestones. Best used for easy recovery runs rather than interval work
  • The EUR district, south of the city centre, has wide open roads and a lake with paved paths -- good for longer steady-state efforts

Nearby HYROX Races

If September does not suit you, Italy and surrounding countries offer other HYROX options during the 2025/26 season:

  • Bologna: April 4-6, 2026 (approximately 380 km north by high-speed train, around 2.5 hours)
  • Milan: December 5-6, 2026 (approximately 570 km north, about 3 hours by Frecciarossa)
  • Vienna: Check HYROX Vienna 2026 for dates and details
  • Barcelona: November 12-15, 2026 (accessible by flight, around 2 hours from Rome Fiumicino)

Race Day Tips

  • Arrive at least 90 minutes before your wave start. Registration queues and bag drop take time, especially at multi-day events
  • Collect your race bib and timing chip at the registration desk. Bring a printed or digital copy of your confirmation and a valid ID
  • Italian HYROX events are well-organised, but warm-up areas can fill up quickly in morning waves. Get there early to claim your space
  • Bring your own nutrition. Gels, bars and drinks are available at HYROX vendors, but queues build before popular wave times
  • Spectators: Entry is typically free for supporters. Italian crowds bring real energy -- embrace it
  • September temperatures in Rome can still be warm, particularly mid-afternoon. If you have a choice of wave time, earlier slots mean cooler conditions
  • Post-race hydration is important. Rome's September heat can accelerate sweat losses even indoors
