HYROX Tenerife 2026
HYROX Tenerife 2026 brings competition to the Canary Islands for a three-day event from September 4-6. One of Europe's most popular year-round training destinations, Tenerife is unique among HYROX venues: a subtropical volcanic island where elite athletes from across Europe run altitude camps at Teide, while beach and resort athletes at sea level pursue very different goals.
Tenerife in early September sees temperatures around 25-28°C with low humidity, particularly in the south of the island. The race is contested indoors, but athletes will benefit from warm weather for outdoor training and warm-up sessions. For many northern European participants, combining the race with a training camp or holiday makes Tenerife one of the most compelling stops on the HYROX European calendar.

Getting There
By Air
- Tenerife South Airport (TFS, Reina Sofía) -- the main tourist airport, approximately 60 km south of Santa Cruz and 15 km east of Playa de las Américas. Handles the majority of charter and low-cost flights from Europe. Direct routes from London (4h), Amsterdam (4h15m), Frankfurt (4h), Scandinavia, and most major European cities. Busiest in winter but well served year-round
- Tenerife North Airport (TFN, Los Rodeos) -- approximately 10 km west of Santa Cruz, closer to the capital and La Laguna. Handles Iberia services to mainland Spain and inter-island connections to the other Canary Islands
- Depending on your accommodation location, TFS is usually more convenient for the southern resort zone and TFN for the north and capital
By Transport on the Island
- TITSA buses -- Tenerife's public bus network (guaguas) covers the island. Route 111 connects TFS airport to Santa Cruz; local routes serve the resort zones. Reliable but journey times can be long across the island
- Taxis and car hire -- taxis are widely available at both airports and in resort areas. Car hire is the most practical option for exploring the island or if the venue is outside the resort zone. Book in advance for September as demand is high
- Tram (tranvía) -- a tram line connects Santa Cruz to La Laguna in the north. Useful if staying in the capital area
- Once the venue is confirmed, the best transport route will depend heavily on its location (south vs north). Factor in longer journey times if crossing the island
By Car
- Renting a car gives maximum flexibility on an island where distances and public transport journey times can be significant
- The TF-1 motorway connects TFS airport northward to Santa Cruz in around 1 hour. The TF-2 runs across the island to TFN
- Traffic in the south resort zone can be heavy during peak September tourist season
- Parking at resort venues is generally available. Confirm event-specific parking once the venue is announced
Where to Stay
Tenerife has one of Europe's largest hotel stocks. The choice depends primarily on whether the venue is in the south (resort zone) or north (Santa Cruz / La Laguna).
- Playa de las Américas / Costa Adeje (south) -- the main tourist resort zone with thousands of hotel rooms, direct beach access, and excellent facilities. Ideal if the venue is in the south. Very busy in September — book early
- Los Cristianos (south) -- a more relaxed resort town south of Playa de las Américas. Good hotel options and slightly less crowded than the main tourist strip
- Santa Cruz de Tenerife (north) -- the island's capital with a different atmosphere: working city rather than resort. Good mid-range hotels, the best restaurants on the island, and closer to TFN airport. If the venue is in the north, this is the most practical base
- La Orotava / Puerto de la Cruz (north) -- historic towns in the lush Orotava valley on the north coast. Cooler climate, different character, excellent if combining the race with hiking in Teide National Park
- September is peak season in Tenerife. All accommodation fills quickly, especially in the south. Book well in advance
Tip: If you are planning a training camp in Tenerife around the race, consider staying inland near Teide. Altitude camps at 2000-2300m are a feature of professional training blocks here. Factor in acclimatisation time if racing at sea level immediately after high-altitude work.
Training in Tenerife
Tenerife is one of Europe's premier endurance training destinations, used by professional cyclists, triathletes, and runners year-round. HYROX athletes will find excellent options for both gym-based and outdoor training.
- CrossFit affiliates and functional fitness studios -- the south resort zone has several boxes and studios with HYROX-appropriate equipment, catering to the international training community. Guest passes are generally available
- Resort hotel gyms -- many large resort hotels in the south have significant gym facilities. Ask about equipment before booking if HYROX-specific training is a priority
- Sled track access can be limited outside specialist CrossFit boxes. Confirm in advance with your chosen facility
- Santa Cruz has better coverage of commercial gym chains but fewer specialist functional fitness studios than the resort zone
Running Routes
- Costa Adeje / Playa de las Américas promenade -- a flat seafront path running several kilometres along the southern coast. Excellent surface for tempo and interval work. Busy in the morning and evening. Start early to avoid peak tourist traffic
- Teide National Park trails -- volcanic trails at altitude ranging from easy walks to technical mountain runs around the 3718m peak. Take acclimatisation seriously — Teide base is at around 2000m
- Anaga Rural Park (north) -- subtropical laurel forest trails in the northeast of the island. Dramatically different terrain from the south. Best for trail running and hiking recovery
- The south of the island's flat coastal roads are popular with cyclists and triathletes and provide good options for long runs in warm, dry conditions
Nearby HYROX Races
Tenerife stands alone as an island event, but mainland Spain and Europe offer accessible alternatives:
- Malaga: April 16-19, 2026 (HYROX Malaga 2026, direct flight from Tenerife approximately 2 hours)
- Barcelona: November 12-15, 2026 (HYROX Barcelona 2026, direct flight around 2.5 hours from TFS)
- Valencia: October 16-18, 2026 (direct flight from Tenerife, around 2 hours)
- Tenerife's unique position as a training hub and island race destination makes it genuinely different from any other HYROX venue in Europe. For many athletes, it justifies its own trip
Race Day Tips
- Arrive at least 90 minutes before your wave start. Island events with concentrated participation require efficient time management for registration and warm-up
- Collect your race bib and timing chip at registration. Bring a printed or digital copy of your confirmation and a valid ID (passport recommended for international travellers)
- September in Tenerife is warm — outdoor temperatures in the high 20s even in the south. Stay well hydrated from the night before and on the morning of the race
- Transport across the island can take longer than expected in peak tourist season. Add buffer time if travelling from accommodation far from the venue
- Bring your own nutrition. On-site vendors will be available, but an island event may have more limited supply than larger mainland races
- Spectators: Tenerife is an ideal spectator destination. Supporters who are not racing can enjoy the island's beaches, hikes, and food while athletes compete
- Allow 48 hours minimum after racing before flying if possible, especially after a hard effort in warm conditions. Dehydration and fatigue increase discomfort on long-haul flights
